******Why are Winter Grille Covers (Winterfronts) an important, and in some cases, a necessary accessory to northern based vehicles both large and small during the winter season?*******

Top issue:

Driver Safety and Comfort

Drivability can be impacted in northern climates when an engine cannot meet or maintain adequate the normal operating temperature. When the water temp gauge is stuck below what is considered optimal, it can cause other worrisome symptoms impacting the operator’s vision and focus. The defrost may be blowing only warm or even cold air. As the moisture content naturally builds in the cab, windows can begin to frost or freeze over from the inside. If it is snowing or sleeting outside, the outer windows may begin to freeze over. Lastly, a cold cab can cause an operators outer extremities discomfort with freezing toes, fingers, and face if the conditions get bad enough. This would increase the probability of reduced reaction time and alertness during unsafe road conditions.

Secondary issues:

What happens when the engine cannot reach its optimal engine temperature?

Emissions system

The modern diesel engine is designed to run at hotter temperatures than its predecessor to meet government regulated emission levels. Not long ago, the diesel engine was built solely for low RPM power and longevity. It was not uncommon to see well maintained engines lasting a million miles or more. These engines were engineered for long haul (Commercial vehicles) and extended running applications (large ships). The engine would warm slowly to its optimal engine temperature then continue to run for an extended period.

Modern engines that fail to maintain proper operating temperatures during cold weather operations wreak havoc on the emission system, especially short-trip passenger vehicles and “in-town” trucks. The emission system fails to get hot enough to burn soot in the diesel particulate filter (DPF) and begins to clog. This in turn leads to more frequent REGEN cycles along with difficulty in properly conducting a full REGEN to burn off the built-up soot in cold weather. Down time and expensive repairs soon follow when the diesel particulate filter (DPF) completely clogs and requires replacement.

Reduced Fuel Mileage

Generally, a diesel engine monitored by an engine control module (ECM) will call for more fuel to generate heat, until it reaches the manufacturer’s optimal water temperature, controlled by an automatic thermal sensitive mechanical valve (thermostat). When unrestricted arctic air continuously blasts the engine bay through the front radiator, the operator may notice that the water temperatures may never reach that “normal” operating range.

Increased Wear and Tear

Heat expands, cold contracts. A turbine jet engine, taken from idle on the ground to max power can physically grow half an inch or more over the length of the entire engine. While this is an extreme example, it shows thermodynamics in play. It is common practice when rebuilding these and other types of engines to cool (shrink) a male part, while heating (expand) a female part for a semi-permanent attachment. So, when the diesel engine cannot maintain proper engine temps, the geometry of the entire block assembly is skewed causing premature component wear.
